Permanent or Dialup Service
Permanent connections may be continuously connected online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dialup services may only remain online for a limited time
Permanent connections

May remain connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Permanent connections are not subject to disconnection when idle, nor are they subject to 10 min delay between dialins

Processes can be running on a server which can service net users, e.g. IRC server or web server.

A permanent connection is better for those who need to regularly check their email (saves on Telstra call costs) and is essential for those providing net services, e.g. web hosting services.

A port is reserved exclusively to the one subscriber and a fixed IP address is assigned.

Dialup connections

Dialup connection services are personal.

Only one person may be using the service at the one time.

A computer may be connected to the Internet for a limited time; up to 2 hours or more whilst sufficient lines are free and are subject to disconnection when idle for more than 15 minutes. A 10 min delay is imposed between dialins.

A Permanent Connection is more appropriate for usage of more than 200 hours per month by the one service.

Access Net offers several types of Dialup connections. Dialup Services for more information.
