Client Email Host service
Access Net provides for clients operating a permanent connection to have all email for their domain routed to their mail host server. The mail server must not permit Open Relay. Links as to how to protect your Mail Server from allowing Open Relay are included here.
An 'open relay' is an email server which allows unauthorised access so that a third party (in particular a spammer) can send email through the server. Allowing this access puts the owner of the mail server at risk of having their own email blocked by other sites, incurring significant 'download' costs, degraded network performance, and the cost and aggravation of dealing with the inevitable complaints and abuse from other victims of spammers. The use of 'open relays' by spammers is becoming increasingly common.

Spammers use open relays to either: hide their identity, or avoid the retaliation which follows in the wake of their actions. Access Net clients who run their own email server must ensure that their server is not open to abuse. To this end it is necessary to allow the mail server to only accept email which is either destined for a local recipient (one of your own users) or sent from a local machine (typically off your LAN).

Instructions as to securing an email server vary from one server to another. Information on how to do this is freely available over the Internet for various types of servers, in particular open source servers such as Sendmail, Postfix, and Qmail. Clients using other mail servers, especially proprietary software such as Microsoft Exchange, Novell GroupWise, or AppleShare IP, should consult their server documentation and, if necessary, contact their software vendor for assistance.
